Optics need suspension, not padding
A lens is a glass assembly inside a barrel. What damages it is a point load on the filter thread, the mount, or an extended hood, and a shock transmitted through a barrel that is resting on a hard surface. The correct interior supports the barrel along its length, leaves the front element clear, and separates bodies so a camera cannot rock against a lens.
