An optical equipment case protects an assembly where the sensitive part is glass and a calibrated mechanical interface. The interior suspends the body, keeps every coated surface unloaded, and prevents the foam itself from shedding particles onto optics.

Why foam choice is an optical problem
A coated surface scratched by a foam fibre is ruined even though the case survived. That rules out open-cell and crumbly foams. It also means the cut has to be precise enough that the optic does not rock in its pocket, because repeated micro-motion against a hard edge polishes and then marks the coating.
