Drop testing for protective cases: orientations, dummy mass, foam thickness selection and how a customer-commissioned drop test is arranged.
The orientations that matter
- Corner — the worst case for the shell
- Edge — the worst case for the latch
- Face flat — the worst case for the base foam
- Top-down — the case most people forget
Foam thickness and stopping distance
Peak force falls as stopping distance rises. Going from a 20 mm to a 50 mm base layer under a 15 kg assembly is the single largest reduction available in a case of this type, and it costs foam, not tooling.
Verification policy
Only tests actually performed are described with figures. Where no test record exists for a model we say so, and quote the test as a separate work package.
